Haagse creatieven kraken de Asta in Den Haag

Maandag 31 mei is de Asta - het monumentale pand aan het Spui in Den Haag - gekraakt namens de culturele organisaties TodaysArt, TAG, Teletekst is Dood, PIP, Shoot Me Film Festival, VillaNuts, Langweiligkeit, Haagse Skate Unie, Paard van Troje en The Generator. De initiatiefnemers hebben als doel een statement te maken in de recentelijke ontwikkelingen rond het wetsvoorstel voor een algeheel kraakverbod, de ontwikkeling van Cultuur Forum 2018 in Den Haag en de voorgestelde bezuinigingen op kunst- en cultuur. Naast de initiatiefnemers hebben een aantal andere culturele organisaties en individuele kunstenaars aangegeven achter de actie te staan.

De initiatiefnemers leggen de nadruk op het positieve uitgangspunt van deze collectieve actie en hebben aangegeven bereid te zijn om in overleg met belanghebbenden afspraken te maken voor de toekomst, waarbij zij slechts gebruik willen maken van het gebouw zolang er geen concrete plannen zijn. De actie heeft als uitgangspunt draagvlak te creëren voor de grote culturele potentie van een dergelijke locatie in de binnenstad van Den Haag.

Op 1 juni zal heeft ook de Eerste Kamer ingestemd met een algeheel kraakverbod. Als een direct tegengeluid op de wet wordt met de kraak van de Asta gerefereerd naar talloze voorbeelden van vele vandaag de dag succesvolle culturele organisaties en broedplaatsen (zoals Korzo, De Blauwe Aanslag, De Illusie, Toneelgroep De Appel / Appeltheater, Melkweg, Paradiso, Tivoli en vele anderen) die opgebloeid zijn door de beschikbaarheid van goedkope werk- en woonruimte, met het behoud van waardevolle monumentale panden en culturele uitingen tot gevolg.

De ambitie van de initiatiefnemers was om vanuit het gebouw activiteiten en krachten te bundelen en middels cultureel ondernemerschap de omgeving een hedendaagse en stedelijke uitstraling te geven met een positieve spin-off voor het gebied en de stad. Hiermee wordt direct ingehaakt op de actuele discussie rondom de herontwikkeling van het Spuiplein als Internationaal Cultuurforum en de kandidatuur van Den Haag als culturele hoofdstad van Europa in 2018.

Na een week is het pand onveilig verklaard door de brandweer. De krakers hebben het pand daarom verlaten. Olof van Winden (TodaysArt) zegt hierover tegen 3voor12.nl: 'Het is erg goed geweest voor het collectieve gevoel in Den Haag. Bovendien is de discussie hierdoor op gang gekomen. Cultural organizations and creative parties squat the Asta in The Hague

On Monday, May 31, the Asta - the monumental building on the Spui in The Hague - was squatted on behalf of the cultural organizations TodaysArt, TAG, Teletekst is Dood, Shoot Me Film Festival, Villa Nuts, Langweiligkeit, Haagse Skate Unie, Paard van Troje, and The Generator. The cultural organizations aim to make a statement against the recent developments concerning the implementation of a new law that will bring into effect a total ban on squatting, the development of the Culture Forum 2018 in The Hague, and the proposed budget cuts on arts and culture. In addition to the organizations listed above, a number of other cultural organizations and individual artists have publicly stated their support of this initiative.

The cultural organizations emphasize the positive premise of this collective action and have indicated their willingness to consult with the owners of the building and other stakeholders to discuss the possibilities for the future. The aim is to only use the building until the stakeholders come up with concrete plans for the property. The initiative also aims to create support for exploring the great cultural potential of such a location in downtown The Hague.

On June 1st, the Senate approved a total ban on squatting. To highlight the positive aspects of squatting, the organizations refer to numerous examples of many of today's successful cultural organizations and hotspots (i.e. Korzo, Blue Attack, The Illusion, Theatre The Apple / Appel Theatre, Melkweg, Paradiso, Tivoli and many others) that have flourished due to the availability of cheap workspace and housing. Squatting has also resulted in the preservation of valuable historic buildings and cultural expressions. The ambition of the parties involved was to facilitate a positive cultural spin-off through combined efforts, activities and well-organized cultural entrepreneurship in this prominent area in the city centre, thereby giving both this area and the city in general a strong impulse of modern and urban culture.

After a week the fire department declared the Asta unsafe. The squatters left the building.
